The world-renowned Aharon Appelfeld (1932) is the Nestor of Israeli literature. He has written over forty works of prose, most of which are set against the backdrop of the Shoah. His best-seller The Story of a Life follows the unbelievable course of his own life: a happy childhood in Ukraine before the war, the concentration camps, the confusion that followed, and a new life in Palestine. Speaking to writer Joseph Pearce, Appelfeld will reflect on his life and work. An exclusive encounter with one of the greatest authors of the 20th century.

Appelfeld has written more than forty works, both fiction and non-fiction, including Badenheim 1939, The Iron Tracks (winner of the National Jewish Book Award), The Story of a Life (winner of the Prix Médicis Étranger) and Until the Dawn’s Light.

In addition to the Prix Médicis Étranger, Appelfeld has also won the Nelly Sachs Prize for his entire oeuvre and the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for Blooms of Darkness. The Jewish-Italian writer Primo Levi spoke highly of this “unmistakable voice”, calling Appelfeld “eloquent in his restraint”.

Most notably praised for his indirect and sober narration, his work focuses on the holocaust, although never as a direct subject. An important recurring theme in Appelfeld’s novels is the silence with which “unspeakable” experiences are met, suggesting that language is insufficient to describe all the suffering which has taken place.
