The Auschwitz Foundation organized this major international conference in collaboration with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), the University of Liège, the ULB Institute of Sociology, the University of Antwerp, Antwerp University Center, the University Center Sint-Ignatius Antwerp, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) and the Brussels Goethe Institute.
It aimed to carry out a systematic and critical study of the different means of transmitting remembrance of Nazi crimes and genocides, through history, archives, testimony, narratives, museums, monuments, commemorations, literature, the cinema, other media and education in schools. The status, structures, functioning and impact of each of these means were analyzed, together with their specific contribution to the transmission of remembrance. This task was carried out by 11 working groups, each of which analyzed one means of remembrance in particular: "Places of Remembrance-Survivors and Heirs", "History and Remembrance", "Testimony and Archives", "Literature", "Cinema", "Other Media" "Museums", "Monuments and Commemorations", "Education", "Psychological Transmission Processes" and "The Arts and Remembrance".
In all, over 130 contributors from European and US universities participated in the various working groups.
