Auschwitz Foundation - Andreas Huyssen conference “The shadow theater as a means of political remembrance” on 11 December 2012
News

As part of its cycle of conferences and debates, the Auschwitz Foundation invited Professor Andreas Huyssen of Columbia University, New York. The event will be held on Tuesday, December 11th from 5PM to 7PM in the Albertine (Royal Library of Belgium)

“The shadow theater as a means of political remembrance”

The conference focuses on two artists whose work is based on past traumatic experiences and their current effects: the partition of India for Nalini Malani and the apartheid regime in South Africa for William Kentridge. Both artists presented their work this year at Kassel’s dOCUMENTA (13). Each uniquely developed modern forms of Shadow Theater as an aesthetic technique the fragility and necessity of political remembrance with stimulating power. Paradigmatic figures, the respective works of Kentridge and Malani raise key questions about the “world art” after modernism and the metamorphosis of transnational politics of remembrance in the so-called periphery of the world.

Andreas Huyssen is a professor of the Germanic Languages Department at the University of Columbia in New York. In 1998, he founded the “Centre for Comparative Literature and Society”. He is also one of the founders of the New German Critique which was created in 1974. The journal is a leading reference in the field.
