The Symposium will take place on Friday, January 18 and Saturday, January 19 at the Maison Heinrich Heine of the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris
“États des lieux de la mémoire” [Current status of the memory]
Symposium organized by Philippe Mesnard and the Collège international de philosophie (Paris), the Auschwitz Foundation (Brussels), the CELIS (EA 1002) and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (Clermont-Ferrand).
Much has been said and written about the group and community memories restricting their relationship and their history to conflicts, “wars”, competitions, strategies of concealment or of silencing to the extent that these terms have become platitudes of a kind of norm generally on the collective and cultural memory that is the basis of academic and media discourse, without any interviews – with a few exceptions.
This symposium will intend to undertake a critical reading of these terms by questioning the emergence, constitution (the institution) and the bringing together of various exemplary memories of great violence of the twentieth century. The interventions will give a comparative approach, on the one hand, the emergence and establishment of certain memories of group (how are they viewed and regarded in the public space and culturally?) on the other hand, relationships that these memories can have with other memories with which they share, if not the same event, at least a timeframe, characteristics or similar concerns.
